The U.S. Chemical Safety Board is facing disbandment — and the implications are alarming.

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board is facing disbandment — and the implications are alarming. We cannot afford to lose one of the few independent bodies dedicated solely to preventing chemical disasters.

Why the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) Must Not Be Dismantled: Because protecting lives, communities, and the environment is not optional. For over 25 years, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) has quietly but powerfully shaped the safety landscape of chemical industries. Its mission? To investigate major industrial chemical accidents, uncover root causes, and issue non-regulatory, science-based recommendations that help prevent future incidents. Unlike enforcement agencies, the CSB doesn’t assign blame. Instead, it delivers knowledge — the kind of knowledge that saves lives, avoids catastrophic environmental damage, and strengthens safety cultures across industries. But now, this vital agency is at risk of being defunded and dismantled. If that happens, we don’t just lose an agency:

1. We lose independent investigations into high-impact chemical incidents

2. We lose critical lessons learned that are shared with industries and regulators worldwide

3. We lose a watchdog for worker safety and community protection

4. We risk returning to an era where chemical disasters become more frequent, more deadly, and more expensive.

Past CSB investigations have led to sweeping changes in process safety standards — across oil and gas, petrochemicals, manufacturing, and more. From BP Texas City Refinery Explosion (2005) to deep water horizon explosion (2010), their reports have exposed design flaws, highlighted systemic gaps, and guided meaningful improvements in safety practices. The entire global process safety community benefits from the CSB’s work. Its reports are studied in boardrooms, universities, and control rooms around the world.

That’s why this moment matters. We’re calling on professionals, safety leaders, engineers, policymakers, and concerned citizens to stand up for the CSB. Sign the petition urging lawmakers to preserve and strengthen this agency. Even if it feels symbolic, your support sends a powerful message: That the work of every investigator, scientist, and safety advocate at the CSB is seen, valued, and essential to a safer future.

Let’s not allow short-term politics to dismantle what took decades to build: A smarter, safer, and more accountable approach to chemical operations. If you’ve worked in chemical safety, risk management, or industrial operations — or if your community has ever been impacted — you know what’s at stake. Let’s act before we lose this critical line of defense.
